If you have been all over Washington DC, then you need to get to Mount Vernon, also. You could ride a bike here on the Mount Vernon Trail, which is about 18 miles from downtown Washington DC. Or, it is also accessible by car, however, not by the metro. It is a little like visiting Williamsburg and that there are many old buildings that are original.

This museum is really new and up to date. It has excellent exhibits for children and adults; artifacts, movies, a childrens' center, etc. It was also very nicely decorated for the holidays. It complements the historic area of the estate very well.

The tour of the mansion is somewhat interesting, but it will not blow you away. However, it is worth a visit to see the tomb werewhere Washington and Martha Washington are buried. Nearby is a memorial to the slaves that worked at Mount Vernon and that is quite interesting to consider their situation in light of the liberty for which Washington fault. The orientation Center is first rate and there's a nice film to watch that gives you a feel for Washington and his military genius.

Adorable historical place

This museum and education center feels brand new, and is an immersive experience designed to teach and explore Washington's life and accomplishments. You walk through different scenarios and really feel like you're in the forest with a young Washington, or on the battlefield in winter, or becoming the first spymaster of the new country. There's a kids area as well, with costumes to try on and crafts to explore.

This is a well funded museum area. It had a lot of stuff happening and I had a hard time thinking of anything wrong, but at the same time it felt a little too glitzy. It feels more like a scene from an amusement park than a museum. Something wasn't quite right about it for me, but my wife enjoyed it.
